Finding out you are pregnant is a life-changing moment, and the very first question that follows is almost always: “When is the baby arriving?” Pinpointing your Estimated Due Date (EDD) is crucial—not just for planning your nursery, but for scheduling essential prenatal tests, genetic screenings, and monitoring fetal development.
While a standard human pregnancy lasts about 280 days (or 40 weeks), calculating the exact finish line depends heavily on how you conceived and the length of your natural menstrual cycle. The medical gold standard—known as Naegele’s rule—calculates this date by adding 280 days to the first day of your Last Menstrual Period (LMP).

The 3 Medical Methods for Dating a Pregnancy
1. The Last Menstrual Period (LMP) Method
If you have a regular 28-day cycle, doctors calculate your due date by taking the first day of your last period, adding 7 days, and subtracting 3 months. Because exact ovulation days are hard to track, the medical community assumes conception happened about two weeks after your period started.
2. The Conception Date Method
If you track your ovulation meticulously using basal body temperature or ovulation predictor kits (OPKs), you might know the exact day you conceived. In this case, your due date is calculated by adding exactly 266 days to your conception date.
3. The IVF Transfer Method
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is the most precise method of all. Since the age of the embryo is known, the math is exact. For a Day-3 embryo transfer, the due date is 263 days from the transfer date. For a Day-5 blastocyst transfer, it is 261 days.
